Surprise Stadium

Surprise Stadium (Surprise Recreation Campus), built in 2003 is the Spring Training home of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers. It is located in, big surprise, Surprise Arizona which is about 25 miles north and west of downtown Phoenix. Surprise Recreation Campus includes six full practice fields and a half field for each team.

Surprise’s Stadium seats 10,500 fans. Most of the seats in Surprise Stadium are found in the main grandstand, which extends from the right fieldfoul pole to left field foul pole. A small upper deck overhangs a few rows of the lower level seating just behind the dugouts. The second deck houses the stadium’s suites and press box, plus a few sections of seats for fans.

As the Surprise Stadium has two Major League teams it’s actually split into two distinct halves. Each team has a two-story clubhouse set in their outfield corner – the Royals in left, Rangers in right. Surprise Stadium is not only home to Major League Baseball but it hosts little league, high school and college baseball events.

There are two small souvenir shops that cater to fans of both teams, one is located behind home plate and the other beyond center field.

Like many of the Cactus League playing fields the Surprise playing field is symmetrical – 379 feet to the fence in the alleys and a distant 350 feet down the baselines, where a bullpen is stationed next to each foul pole.
