Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art

The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, also known as SMoCA, offers changing exhibitions on contemporary and modern art, architecture, and design in 18,500 square feet of galleries in the Scottsdale Center for the Arts complex.

A highlight is Arizona artist James Turrell’s “Knight Rise” skyspace, a viewing chamber with benches along the wall and an elliptical-shaped opening in the ceiling. The skyspace is designed to use architecture and lighting to create the illusion that visitors are seated in an ocean of air. It is one of only three Turrell skyspaces open to the public.

The museum also has docent-led tours and a gallery featuring the work of young artists.
