The Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park is located on the site of a 1,500-year-old village from the Hohokam civilization that settled in Phoenix from 450 to 1450 A.D. and built 1,000 miles of canals for an irrigation system that was so advanced that some modern canals follow the same routes.
The park, which is owned and operated by the city of Phoenix, features the ruins from an 800-year-old Hohokam platform mound and a prehistoric ballcourt.
The platform mound was erected late in the Hohokam period and served as the center of village life, as did 40 other mounds scattered through the Phoenix area. Only three mounds remain.
Visitors can explore the mound and ballcourt by taking the Ruin Trail, which also features replicas adobe buildings and pithouses like those used by the Hohokam. The museum’s gallery has exhibits about Hohokam agriculture, architecture and art.
