With all that is happening in the world today, especially the recent terrorist events in France, many people are concerned about the security at the Super Bowl 2015. The University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona holds up to 78,800 people in standing room only capacity. Keeping all these people safe requires a lot of security. Costs for this security will run into the multiple millions of dollars, involve multiple agencies, thousands of people and state-of-the-art technology.
Federal, state and local law-enforcement agencies are involved in the planning and tactical application of security for the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl being held in Glendale, Arizona. With the many events planned pre and post of these games, there are definitely challenges in keeping everyone safe. The security teams will be charged with protecting not only the 75,000+ fans attending the game but also the teams and team hotels, the various Super Bowl parties and special events.
There are approximately 50 local, state and federal law-enforcement agencies in 2 dozen specialized work groups assigned to protect team hotels, Super Bowl parties in Scottsdale, the throngs expected to attend the NFL Experience in downtown Phoenix and for the actual game in Glendale. The the teams of officers and third party contractors will be conducting air surveillance, involved in the detection of explosive devices, protecting celebrities and dignitaries among other things.
Here are some of the security items in place for the Super Bowl 2015.
Security Cameras
The Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority has contracted with the Avigilon Corporation to provide video surveillance at the University of Phoenix Stadium for Super Bowl XLIX. The agreement provides for the installation of 200 HD surveillance cameras and other hi-tech equipment. Avigilon was selected for their quality and the clarity of images along with ease of use. You can image what it will take to install these cameras in the over 1.7 million square foot stadium. (source: Phoenix Business Journal)
The camera system will rely on Avigilon’s 2-megapixel HD pan/tilt/zoom (p/t/z) cameras for additional coverage and their software which allows security personnel to operate and control cameras easily and in real-time.
Security Personnel
Safe Management is hiring people to maintain security in and around the stadium. Since 2006 S.A.F.E. Management has had the role of primary security provider for the NFL’s Super Bowl. Each year, S.A.F.E. recruits and trains local personnel to provide security services for pre-event, game day and post event festivities.
S.A.F.E.’s event security duties include:
Access Control
Asset Protection
Crowd Management
Entry point inspections (hand wands, magnetometers, pat downs, bag inspection)
Police
For the regular season Arizona Cardinals game, Glendale has 150-200 officers both inside and outside the stadium at each game. Because of the increased attendance and ancillary events, this will require many more. The additional overtime hours needed for this coverage will run in excess of $1 million dollars.
And it’s not just the city of Glendale adding security. Other metro cities are stepping up security. As mentioned above there are 24 specialized work groups working on security issues.
If You’re Going to the Game
Security screening for Super Bowl 49 will be significantly heightened compared to regular season game. Anything you are carrying will be thoroughly inspected. There are a number of prohibited items (see list below) that you may be asked to return to your vehicle. Be advised that the NFL discourages participants from bringing any type of bag to the game. If you do need to bring a bag, follow the guidelines below to ensure you’ll be allowed in.
The list below is from the NFL’s Super Bowl 49 website.
• Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12″ x 6″ x 12″ OR
• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar), AND
• Small clutch bags, 4.5″ x 6.5″, with or without a handle or strap, can be taken into the stadium with one of the clear plastic bag options.
• An exception will be made for medically necessary items after thorough inspection at a gate designated for this purpose.
Prohibited bags include, but are not limited to: purses or bags larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags/draw string bags that are not clear or exceed 12″ x 6″ x 12″, luggage of any kind, computer bags, binocular cases and camera bags, and large traditional seat cushions that have pockets, zippers, compartments or covers.

The 2015 Super Bowl being held in Glendale, Arizona is fast approaching. The game being played between the AFC/NFC champs is scheduled for February 1, 2015. Perhaps, you’re thinking about going to the game? If so, we did some research to how much does it does a Super Bowl ticket cost.
First, a little history. The first Super Bowl was played in 1967 at the Coliseum in Los Angeles. The Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers had the pleasure of being the first NFL teams to face off in the Super Bowl or as it was called back then, AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Tickets to the first Super Bowl game would have set you back $12. That’s right, you could have attended that game for twelve bucks.
Today the prices are far from that. The face value of Super Bowl tickets run from $800-$1,900. Good luck ever buying these tickets at face value. Ticket Brokers and Ticket Liquidators snap these up and then resell the tickets.
The most inexpensive Super Bowl ticket price we found today (January 16, 2015) was $1,888 at VividSeats.com. And, you guessed it. These tickets are in the end zone as far from the field as possible. As you move closer to the field and closer the the 50 yard line, the prices go up significantly. In order to actually see the game up close, you’ll pay almost $10,000 for a seat on or near the 50 yard line.
Be careful if you are buying tickets to the game. There are many scams out there and make sure you read reviews and vet the website selling the tickets.
The ‘game’ is only one of the events in and around the Super Bowl. The NFL experience along with concerts and other events are scheduled. The traffic in Glendale will be extraordinary.
If you have the money, it’s a great once-in-a-lifetime experience. You could cross this off your bucket list. I think my 80″ HD TV is the place to watch the game. I have the comfort of my couch and a refrigerator just steps away. And, by watching the game at home, I won’t miss any of the great commercials.
And, if you think about it, you could take what it cost for 2 Super Bowl tickets and buy yourself an 80″ HD TV, surround sound and you would probably have enough left over to buy a new couch too.
This is a great weekend for Phoenix and Arizona Tourism. The WM Phoenix Open is being played during the week with the final round being played on the same day as the Super Bowl. Many visitors go to the Phoenix Open and then hit the bars to watch the game.
Tiger Woods, one of the biggest names in golf, has committed to play in the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open. The last time Woods played in this tournament was in 2001. You may remember in 1997 when he famously, hit a hole-in-one on the 16th hole. The par 3, 16th hole is set up with stadium style seating. If you were anywhere on the course that day, you could hear the crowd cheering.
Woods wrote on his blog, “It will be great to return to Phoenix, the crowds are amazing and always enthusiastic, and the 16th hole is pretty unique in golf.”
And speaking of cheering, the organizers and sure to be cheering because with Woods playing this year, the attendance at the 2015 Phoenix is bound to break records.
Woods is returning to golf after injuries kept him from playing most of the season last year. Speculation is that he is using the Phoenix Open and the Farmer’s Open as tune-ups and confidence builders in order to have a strong showing for major tournaments this year.
Many remember the messy divorce and separation of Woods and his wife and since then, Woods has not played to his earlier capabilities. The question remains, will he ever win more majors than Jack Nicklaus’ 18?
He has been a very solid player, winning an extraordinary number of tournaments. For a list of his wins, check out the list below:

Regardless of how he plays, he will not only draw participants to the Phoenix Open but he will single-handedly increase TV viewership as well.
For Phoenix and Arizona Tourism, this is an awesome week. Both the 2015 NFL Super Bowl and the Phoenix Open are being played in the Phoenix-metro area the same week. If you’re coming to town, make sure you make reservations well in advance. And for those of you that live in the midwest or northeast, the temperature in Phoenix will be in the mid-70s.
This tournament is the perfect set up for the Super Bowl; watch the final round of play which finishes just before the kick off. What could be better for avid sports fans.
This photo was taken in Strawberry, Arizona. We were trying to figure out if this is a male or female desert tarantula. According to our research, the female has a more stocky body than the male tarantula. For those who are unfamiliar with tarantulas, they have two body parts; the cephalothorax and the abdomen, eight legs and two pedipalps for touching and moving their prey.
In Arizona, they are most active during the monsoon season and early Fall. There are thirty species of tarantulas found in the desert Southwest. The one tarantula that is seen most often is the Aphonopelma chalcodes, most commonly known as the desert tarantula, or Arizona blond tarantula.
Are you one that would pick up this spider to check it out or would seeing this have you run away, cower with fear? Reactions run the gamut but so you know, these spiders are virtually harmless.
There are hundreds of species of tarantulas worldwide, many of which have potent venom. The Arizona tarantula has weak venom so don’t be too concerned.
Don’t be worried if you see the desert tarantula. You would have to seriously provoke this spider to get it to bite you. This tarantula is mostly harmless to humans.
We found this tarantula trying to cross a fairly busy road. For male tarantulas, they spend much of their time searching for a mate. This may be what the spider was doing when we took this picture.
A bit about tarantulas:
Habitat
Tarantulas like to live in dry places. They thrive in dry soils in open areas (desert) and also grassland areas. These spiders are ground dwellers. You won’t see them in the winter months as they hibernate, living off of stored fats. They plug their burrows so predators can’t reach them.
Range
Tarantulas can be found worldwide. The tarantulas in North America can be found in the southern and southwestern states along with Mexico, Central and South America.
Tarantulas are nocturnal hunters, looking for insects like grasshoppers, beetles and other small insects. The venom that tarantulas have is very weak.
Predators
As forbidding as tarantulas look, they do have enemies. Lizards love tarantulas along with snakes, birds, coyotes and foxes…yum. In order to protect themselves, desert tarantulas use their urticating hairs. These urticating hairs are tipped with barbs. When the spider makes contact with their predator, these hairs penetrate. You can imagine how irritating this could be to a predator.
Tarantulas live in deep burrows that are lined with silk webbing to prevent a cave in. As the spider grows and gets bigger, the cave is enlarged. For those of you that have wood piles, tarantulas will live there if there is no soil available for their ‘cave’.
Life Span
So, how long do tarantulas live? Amazing, they can live 9-12 years with female tarantulas living twice as long.
Size
Can you imagine a spider that is 3-4 inches! That would be the desert tarantula.
Have you ever seen a desert tarantula? If so, let us know the circumstance and if you have a photo of that encounter, please upload it for our readers.

The countdown leading to the Super Bowl 2015 in Peoria, Arizona has already started. Whether or not you are an American Football fan, you must have heard about this event. It is the biggest sporting event in the US. In fact, thousands of people fly into the host city from around the world and spend bucket loads of money on the Super Bowl weekend events and activities. If you are asking yourself the question, should I rent my home for Super Bowl 2015? You should make alternate living arrangements and start preparing your home for your tenants. Homeowners who live near Super Bowl destinations have the perfect opportunity to make a great deal of money by renting their homes. Because this is on of the largest sporting events of the year, hotels are often sold out or have outlandish rates and not everyone wants just a hotel room. Some people opt for rental homes because of their privacy and amenities.
You can make an obscene amount of money for each night if you choose to rent out your Arizona home. Why so much? Executive types usually prefer the family setting instead of booking hotels. People who rent out these homes fly in their entire families. Executives can either pay out of their own pockets or do it on the company’s dime. Either way, you as a homeowner get to make good money by renting your place out. These travelers usually take good care of rentals. Therefore, you can be sure that your place will be well taken care of. And, there are things you can do to assure that your property is not damaged or abused.
What is a renter looking for?
Most renters are not very demanding. They just want a nice, clean and updated place to live in while they attend the Super Bowl and the ancillary activities associated with the event. Many visitors schedule a few extra days to visit the popular tourist destinations like the Grand Canyon. However, if you want to make top dollar, your property should have the most sought after amenities. The most sought after amenities for Super Bowl rentals include;
Location of the property is the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of the rental and key to pricing. The closer to the venue, the more you can charge!
Maid services
Large TVs
Barbecue grill
Security guard
Access to swimming pools
If you do not have any of these amenities at your disposal, don’t be discouraged. You can still charge a good price. Make sure that your house is professionally cleaned before renting it out. This small investment will go a long way toward fetching a higher price for your home.
Advertising your home for a Super Bowl Rental
Advertising your property is also encouraged because you will get several bids and a choice of tenants. Craigslist is a free avenue for advertising your property. You should renew the ad every 30 days to ensure that it doesn’t expire. Have a strong marketing message that will attract internet browsers to view your advertisement. You should also have some well photographed, eye-catching images of your home. Renters want to know what your property is like and a variety of photos that showcase your amenities is helpful in selecting the right property. If you are willing to fork out some money for these advertisements, you should hire professionals to take care of them. This will help you in reaching a bigger audience. Increased search engine traffic makes your ad easier to find.
Furniture staging
To make your home look more presentable, you should consider rearranging your furniture. You can do this on your own or hire professionals to do it for you. The process of staging your home involves depersonalizing it. Remove all the family pictures and buy new appliances so that the renters can picture themselves living there. Hiring a home stager is not a new concept. Most stagers usually have their own supplies thus saving on time and money.
Will you pay taxes?
So what are the tax implications of renting out your home for several days? You as the homeowner are obligated to report the taxes from your rental income and pay them. However, there is some good news here. You are also allowed to deduct any expenses that you might have incurred while preparing to rent out your property. For instance, if you rented out your property for $12,000 and you spent $4,000 in commissions, you are only obligated to pay tax on the $8,000 difference. If you have enough time, you can wait for the IRS to deduct other amounts from your taxable income. If you are not well-versed in taxes, you should consider hiring a CPA. You might also consider tax software to help you make sure you are filing the correct documents.
If you make a decision to rent out your property, you should choose the mode of payment before the actual move-in date. This way, there will not be any confusion. So how do you set your price? This depends on the kind of home you own. Does it have enough room and amenities to charge high prices? Check other homes in your area to determine the price you want to set. There are a number of sites that offer sporting event rental homes. VBRO and Airbnb are 2 such sites.
This is something you shouldn’t do lightly. Do your research, make a checklist and plan to cover all the essentials and enjoy the extra cash generated by renting your house for the Super Bowl!
