  • 78th annual Hopi Festival of Arts and Culture April 2, 2011 | Flagstaff, Arizona

    The 78th annual Hopi Festival of Arts and Culture will be held July 2-3 at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. The festival will bring together award-winning Hopi artists from the 12 Hopi villages -- carvers, painters, jewelers, potters, quilters, basketmakres and textile weavers. The event also will feature cultural presentations, music, dances and storytelling, plus Hopi bread and piki baked outside in ovens. 

  • 62nd annual Navajo Festival of Arts and Culture April 2, 2011 | Flagstaff, Arizona

    The 62nd annual Navajo Festival of Arts and Culture will be held August 6-7 at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. The festival will feature more than 100 artists, including weavers, painters, potters, jewelers and filmmakers. The event also will offer hoop and social dances and modern music by the Pollen Trail Dancers and Blackfire. 

  • Glendale Jazz & Blues Festival March 27, 2011 | Phoenix, Arizona

    Jazz performers Randy Brecker and John Abercrombie are headlining the 28th annual Glendale Jazz & Blues Festival in downtown Glendale on April 9-10. 

    Trumpet player Brecker has won four Grammys, and guitarist Abercrombie is a noted session musician. 

    The blues headliners will be Curtis Salgado, who fronted the Grammy-winning Roomful of Blues and was lead vocalist with Santana in the 1990s, and Shemekia Copeland, who won a Grammy nomination with her second album and went on to open for the Rolling Stones.

    The event also will feature craft artists and food vendors.

    Admission is free.

  • My Nana's Best Tasting Salsa Challenge March 27, 2011 | Tempe, Arizona

    More than 80 professional chefs and home cooks will put their salsas to the test in the My Nana’s Best Tasting Salsa Challenge at Tempe Beach Park on April 2.

    The salsa experts compete in mild and hot categories for restaurants, businesses and individuals, with the grand champion earning a $1,000 cash prize.

    They each bring 13 gallons of salsa, so there's plenty for sampling. The event typically draws about 20,000 people over the two days, and they consume 3,000 pounds of tortilla chips as they try out the different recipes. 

    The event is held outdoors at the park along Tempe Town Lake, which is dotted with white tents. Parking is available in nearby lots. 

    Tickets are $10, with free admission for kids 12 and under.

    The 33rd annual Scottsdale Culinary Festival will bring a variety of events, from luxurious dinners and cocktail parties to casual dining at the Great Arizona Picnic.

  • Tucson Folk Festival March 15, 2011 | Tucson, Arizona

    Banjo star Tony Furtado and the Kevin Pakulis Band will headline the 26th annual Tucson Folk Festival on April 30 and May 1.

    More than 100 local and regional acts also will perform at El Presidio Park over the two days. 

    The event is free to the public and features workshops and arts and crafts and food vendors, plus a children's show. 

    The event is expected to draw more than 10,000 fans over the two days.

  • Glendale Bull Riding Invitational March 8, 2011 | Phoenix, Arizona

    Glendale, Arizona will host the National Bull Riders, Glendale Invitiational on March 13th and 14th at the Jobing.com arena.  This is the 11th stop in the Built Ford Tough series.

     
    This event will showcase the world's best bull riders.  The top ranked cowboys and bull riders are expected to compete at the Invitational.
     
    The competition will consist of 3 rounds with the first two rounds featuring the best PBR ranked bulls against the best cowboys.  The final round will consist of the top 15 riders.
     
    The PBR is the top bull riding organization in the world, with contestants from the United States, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, and Canada. Professional Bull Ridigin is one of the fastest growing sports in the country.   You can watch bull riding weekly, just check your local listings.

    Golfers and fans at the Phoenix Open will be greeted by cold weather again this year.  In fact, there is a freeze warning for Phoenix tonight.  Crowds at the Phoenix Open were down last year because of the cold weather.  This year could be a replay based on the current forecast.

     
    The Waste Management Phoenix Open will be played at the TPC Scottsdale, Scottsdale, Arizona.  Tournament play begins on the 3rd and ends on the 6th.  The purse this year is over 6 million dollars with a cool million going to the winner.
     
    Hunter Mahan will be defending his title against a field of well known PGA golfers.

  • Arizona Arts Congress January 29, 2011 | Phoenix, Arizona

    Arizona artists, art advocates and arts-related organizations along with business leaders representing tourism and economic development will meet at the Arizona State Capitol.  This is the 25th annual Arizona Arts Congress.  The meeting will take place from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 7. 

    Registration for the Arizona Arts Congress begins at 7:30 a.m.

    This annual event consists of meetings with Arizona state legislators to discuss the value of arts and culture around the state.  Meetings will also cover how to raise funds for promoting arts education.

  • Arabian Horse Show January 22, 2011 | Scottsdale, AZ

    Arabian horses have a distinct, elegant look, with their small heads and bowed necks. They are intelligent and spirited. Arabian horses from around the world will be in Scottsdale competing in hundreds of events during this show. There will also be more than 300 commercial vendors selling fine art, clothing, exotic jewelry, equestrian products and more. Events begin at 8 a.m. daily.   • Annual Fireworks Convention January 22, 2011 | Lake Havasu, Arizona

    Forgive the residents of Lake Havasu City if your local July 4th fireworks display bores them. Each February, during the Western Pyrotechnic Association convention, the sky above Sara Park literally lights up with the latest and greatest fireworks displays.

    This year, the convention runs from February 17 to 20. At most conventions, the day ends with attendees in the nearest bar talking shop. At this one, called the Western Winter Blast, conventioneers go outside and set the night ablaze.

    Free to anyone who has a good view of the lake.

    This is the perfect event for history buffs, collectors of Old West memorabilia and people interested in cowboys and Indians.
